Paisley Pirates 2 Kilmarnock Avalanche 2
11/10/2003 at Lagoon Leisure Centre
Autumn Cup
Pirates break their home duck but are still looking for a win on home ice. Pirates dominated proceedings throughout the night but couldn't convert their chances early in the match, including Avalanche netminder Colin Gooding pulling off a point blank save to keep out Chris Conaboy in the 9th minute. They were to pay for this when former Pirate Philip Connor fired the visitors in front from close range in the 10th minute. Pirates continued to create chances but Gooding wasn't to be beaten in the first session, notably a double save at close range to keep out Stuart McCaig and James Clark in the 16th minute. Again Pirates were left counting the cost of missed chances when William Callison found himself alone in the slot with only 29 seconds left in the period to double the visitors' lead.
Little changed at the start of the second period, Pirates pressing but it took until the 34th minute before they finally got a reward for their efforts. Even then Gooding will wonder how Conaboy's effort sneaked through him. Pirates immediately showed renewed confidence and only 43 seconds later they were level when Richard Thorp converted a clean face off win by skipper Myles Watson in the Kilmarnock zone. Shortly after and Brian Taylor narrowly missed giving Pirates the lead. Pirates' keeper Gordon Langford, making his first appearance of the season, had had no chance with either goal but he pulled off a key save in the dying seconds of the period from a deflected Connor point drive to send the teams tied at 2-2.
Final period and still its Pirates making the running but they, again, had Langford to thank for keeping the score tied in the 49th minute when he kept out Alan Maitland at point blank range. Not for the first time this season, Pirates got into penalty trouble but Avalanche couldn't make them pay although only another point blank Langford save kept out John Clancy on a powerplay in the 55th minute. Despite out shooting the visitors 14-5 in the final session, Pirates best chance came shorthanded when Stuart Miller broke
clear but Gooding was equal to both the first and the rebound shots. Pirates finished the match on the powerplay but to no avail.
So it's now 3 home matches and still 0 wins, Pirates simply do not have apredator to consistently put away the multiple chances they're creating in
games.
