Camperdown Stars 6 Paisley Pirates 4
19/10/2003 at Dundee Ice Arena
Scottish National League
Pirates stuttering season continued with an opening league defeat in Dundee.
The game had an even start to it with both sides having early opportunities.
Stars were first to convert one when John Dolan, picking up where he left off in last season's Scottish Cup Final, fired home at the second attempt in the 6th minute. Pirates then found themselves on the powerplay when Richard Latto upended Roger Monson. Initially it was only a 2-minute penalty but referee Andy Allsopp lost patience with the Star's protests quickly adding a 10-minute misconduct, which swiftly turned into a game misconduct. The powerplay itself turned into a disaster for Pirates when they gave the puck away in their own zone and Andy Samuel gleefully netted a shorthanded goal
in the 9th minute. Pirates survived a penalty of their own before they got back into the game in bizarre circumstances in the 16th minute, Richard Thorp's harmless centre deflecting off a defenseman's skate and past his bemused netminder. Another poor clearance 40 seconds from the break meant Pirates went in two down again, Samuel again feeding Dolan for his second ofthe night.
The second period was largely penalty dominated with Pirates, initially,
looking the more likely to score, Stuart McCaig and Murray Johnston both had
chances to pull them back within one goal but it wasn't to be. As the period wore on,
Stars began to dominate again, McGurnaghan found only the post in the 36th minute before Pirates again cut their own throats, this time only 24 seconds from the second break. Another poor clearance and Dolan had his hat trick.
4-1 down at the second break, you would be forgiven for thinking Pirates
would wilt but they got the perfect tonic less than 90 seconds into the final session, Myles Watson charging untouched through the Stars back line to rifle Pirates back within two goals. Seconds later Dolan had the puck in the net again but mercifully for Pirates, Allsopp judged the net was off its moorings before the puck crossed the line.
Pirates didn't waste the lifeline and a piece of opportunism from Monson when he was left unmarked coming out of the penalty box, saw them back with in a goal in the 47th minute.
However, within seconds they were back shorthanded and when Samuel netted on the powerplay, in the 49th minute, after Orr had saved Dolan's first effort followed only 30 seconds by another Samuel goal, this time it was Blair andthe lead was back to three. Still there were 10 minutes to go, Pirates weren't lying down and they got another goal back just past the 50 minute mark,McCaig on hand to force home after netminder Ward couldn't hold a StuartMiller effort. Try as they did, Pirates couldn't pull any more back,
including a short 5on3 powerplay and their hopes were finally ended by a late penalty to Miller.
On the night, too many individual errors cost Pirates dear; they effectively gift-wrapped four of the six goals. At the other end, again their own finishing let them down, really only pressuring a shaky home defence in the final 20 minutes.
