GOAL RUSH STUNS THE TIGERS Nov 11 2003 DUNDEE TIGERS................1 PAISLEY PIRATES............11 PAISLEY Pirates' goal drought came to an explosive end at Dundee Ice Arena on Sunday night. And the Buddies landslide win meant coach Paul Heavey's prophecy came true as the Pirates rediscovered their scoring touch. Heavey spoke last week about how Pirates had lacked the killer touch in front of the nets despite having loads of pressure. And he joked that he was fed-up hearing that one day it was all going to come together and his Pirates would give someone a thrashing. But that prediction came true in style up in Dundee as the Paisley side went on an 11-goal rampage. And not even a lengthy 30 minutes spent in the penalty sin bin by Chris Conaboy who is now suspended for this week could dampen their spirits as they hit the goal-den trail. Not for the first time this season, Pirates were in penalty trouble early in this game. And that allowed Tigers to get their only score of the game as Kevin McDonald took advantage of Pirates' penalty to fire the hosts in front in the third minute on the powerplay. Pirates were again shorthanded in the seventh minute, but this time they levelled up through John Churchill for his first of the evening. This was to be a bad-tempered game throughout the evening, but fortunately referee Drew Fraser was experienced enough to just about keep a lid on things. There were several flashpoints in the match with the first coming in the eighth minute when Colin McMillan and McDonald went toe-to-toe in the Tigers zone earning lengthy spells in the penalty box, with the home side ending up on the powerplay, the Pirates edging it 16 minutes to 14. The sides rarely skated five-on-five, but when they did, Pirates were creating all the chances. Chris Conaboy and Brian Taylor both had chances before Stuart McCaig put the visitors in front in the 15th minute. Other than the early goal, Damien Orr in the Pirates goal had little to do. But he was successfully called into action in the 16th minute when Tigers skipper Paul Guilcher broke clear. Another Pirates penalty followed soon after with another Churchill shorthanded goal on 18 minutes. Pirates went goal crazy at the start of the second session. First, Taylor skated the length of the ice to net after only 69 seconds. Then Churchill completed his hat trick in the 23rd minute. Stuart Swiatek then got on the scoresheet in the 26th minute as Pirates laid siege to the home goal. Murray Johnston, Richard Thorp and Churchill's fourth all added to the score as Pirates went 9-1 up before the halfway mark had even been reached. There were other chances, notably Swiatek contriving to miss an open goal, but that was it scoring-wise for the period, helped somewhat by another string of penalties coming the way of Paisley. Pirates penalty bench continued to enjoy occupancy at the start of the final period, including McCaig receiving a lengthy stay after a 2+10 checking from behind offence. Conaboy had already had his share of penalties, but he got first use of the showers in the 46th minute, reacting to a hit from Ian Carstairs. |
