Avalanche 0 Paisley Pirates 7 20/12/2003 at Galleon Centre Scottish National League Magnificent seven for Pirates Given the controversy surrounding Pirates last visit to the Galleon, the game that never was, they arrived with some trepidation. That worry was unfounded as Pirates skated to an easy victory. The match opened in frantic fashion typical of the tight confines of the Kilmarnock rink but with out either side creating anything of note. The first real chance didn't arrive until the 4th minute and with it the opening goal, Stuart Miller firing home through a ruck of players. Kilmarnock did have chances but a Gordon Langford glove save from an Iain Crockatt blue line drive was as close as they came to an equaliser. Pirates were twice shorthanded in the first period but survived comfortably. In between those penalties John Churchill set up Colin McMillan for number two in the 13th minute. If Avalanche had any thoughts of a fight back they were firmly ended with a quick fire hat trick of goals in as many minutes at the start of the second period. First Gary Morris rifled home from the right circle after less than 90 seconds. Then McMillan skated in untouched before backhanding home in the 23rd minute. Then 35 seconds later, Myles Watson won a face off cleanly and fired home in one motion. That Pirates didn't add to the score in the second period was largely due to taking penalties, notably a 10 minute misconduct to Miller, no favouritism here - the ref was his brother! Pirates felt sufficiently safe to give a third period outing to back up keeper Graeme Bell and he had a fairly quiet time, only a point blank chance for Mike Chubb troubling him. It took until Pirates were again shorthanded in the 57th minute before they added to the score, Stuart McCaig breaking out to net number six. Pirates completed the scoring 22 seconds from time, Morris tipping home a Rab Henderson point drive. It really was too easy for Pirates against a Kilmarnock side that had left the Lagoon with a well earned draw earlier this season MAN OF THE MATCH: Paisley: Myles Watson Kilmarnock: Nick Brown SCORING: Paisley: McMillan, Morris 2+0, Watson 1+1, McCaig, Miller 1+0, Nelson 0+2, Churchill, Henderson, Taylor, Thorp 0+1 Kilmarnock: - NETMINDING: Paisley: Langford 24 shots/0 goals Bell 7 shots/0 goals Kilmarnock: Gooding 50 shots/7 goals PENALTIES: Paisley: Miller 10 minutes, McPhail 4, Maceachran, McCaig, McMillan, Thorp 2 Kilmarnock: - |
