| Paisley Pirates
11 Elgin Tornados 1 29/11/2003 at Lagoon Leisure Centre Scottish National League Pirates blow away Tornados. Pirates wasted little time in, effectively, killing this game as a contest with Stuart Miller firing them in front after barely 90 seconds. This coming after Colin McMillan appeared to have scored seconds earlier but his close range rocket was in and out of the net too quickly for the officials to see. Having gone a goal up, Pirates took only 19 seconds to make it 2-0, RichieThorp backhanding home from close range. When Stuart Swiatek finished off a Murray Johnston set up with barely 5 minutes played, the visitors' looked in for a real drubbing but despite continuing to hound the goal, Pirates didn't add to the score in the first period. The closest they came was a John Churchill off the post in the 14th minute. Tornados rarely threatened the home goal, illustrated by a period shot count of 22-5 in favour of the hosts. It was Tornados who made the early second period running and after a couple of close things, they got on the score board in the 25th minute, Kevin Russell finding himself alone in front. This merely fired Pirates up again and when Gary Morris sent an unstoppable rocket from the left circle home in the 29th minute, any hopes of an unlikely comeback were squashed. Pirates continued to press, with Churchill finding the pipework again in the 33rd minute before two goals in nine seconds in the 38th minute completed the period scoring. First Johnston pounced on a rebound from a Swiatek shot then Morris skated untouched through the Elgin defence. The match had been relatively penalty free to this point but that changed 30 seconds from the second break. A clash at the Elgin goal saw Churchill and Warren Nelson both take 2+10 roughing penalties. Although there was no more scoring a Miller effort with 10 seconds left became the third Pirate shot of the evening to come back off the pipes. Pirates were quickly shorthanded at the start of the final session but Tornadoes were left wishing they hadn't. Pirates scored not one but THREEshorthanded goals during the two minutes. First Miller fired home a rebounded Chris Conaboy effort, and then Conaboy himself finished off a Morris set up. Finally Johnston skated the length of the ice. We'd barely made the 5th minute mark before Pirates scored again, this time at even strength, McMillan bringing up double figures from the right circle. Pirates scored the final goal of the game just past the midpoint of the period when Myles Watson set up Brian Taylor in front. It may have been the final goal but it wasn't for the want of trying from the Paisley side but they couldn't find a way past Craig Johnstone in the Elgin net, who despite facing a barrage of rubber all night was still pulling off saves late in the game. Mention should also be made of the Pirates keeper Damien Orr, it may not be the busiest 60 minutes he's endured in his career but endured is the correct word as he played through the pain barrier carrying a leg injury with no recognised back up on the bench. The scoring may have finished but there was still time for more action, Conaboy earning first crack at the showers in the 51st minute, receiving a game misconduct after clashing with Fraser Munro, the Tornado, somehow, escaped punishment. Not for the first time this season, Pirates face back to back games against the same opposition, next Saturday they travel to Elgin in the first round of the Scottish Cup, face off 7PM at the Moray Leisure Centre.
