| Paisley Pirates
6 Kilmarnock Avalanche 1 3/1/2004 at Lagoon Leisure Centre Scottish National League A bumper New Year crowd witness Pirates kids spark another win for the home side. Just short of 400 fans, Pirates biggest crowd of the season, were on hand to see the future as the "kid line" of Alan Campbell, Paul McPhail and Graham Park all on call up from the under 19 side combined to do all the damage in the first period. In what had been a lacklustre first session, Coach Paul Heavey put the line together for a 14th minute shift and they immediately repaid him. Avalanche couldn't cope with their speed and movement with Campbell applying the final touch with both line mates receiving assists. From here Pirates never looked back, only netminder Colin Gooding keeping Pirates at bay, notably tipping a Stuart McCaig shot onto the bar in the 17th minute. He could do nothing, however, a minute later when McPhail picked the puck up behind the Kilmarnock goal, nobody challenged him and before Gooding could react, the puck was in the net. Unusually for a Pirates game the first session was penalty free, indeed the first 13 minutes passed without a single stoppage of any kind. Pirates took less than three minutes to add to the score in the second period, Campbell and McPhail again to the fore as Stuart Miller wristed home from the right circle. The first penalty of the game went the way of Kilmarnock in the 27th minute and although Pirates didn't net a powerplay goal, it was as good as. John Churchill firing off the post still with the extra man but in the melee that followed Colin McMillan fired home seconds after the penalty expired. Only a point blank Gooding save stopped Colin Nelson adding to the score in the 29th minute. It was to be his last contribution as Kilmarnock decided to give an outing to his back up Daryl Findlay on the half hour. Pirates were to be twice shorthanded before the end of the session but Avalanche never looked like making them pay. Indeed it was that kid line that came closest to adding to the score when McPhail fired off the post in the 37th minute. Pirates took only 16 seconds to add to the score in the third period through John Churchill and this was the signal for them to change keepers, Graeme Bell replacing Damien Orr. Kilmarnock had rarely threatened the Paisley goal to this point but Bell was called into action twice stopping Ross McWhirter in the 46th minute. Pirates response to this was to score again, Rab Henderson's point drive in the 48th minute took a deflection along the way past a helpless Findlay. A pair of late penalties gave Kilmarnock a two man advantage and with it they finally broke the shut out in the 51st minute when Colin read tipped home an Alan Maitland point drive. There really was only one word to describe the final nine minutes - scrappy. Neither side looked like adding to the score as time ran out without further incident. In keeping with the youth theme of the night, Pirates scheme of allowing free entry to accompanied minors was again a success and will be repeated before the end of the season.
