Pirates 4 Kirkcaldy Kestrels 0 25/10/2003 at Lagoon Leisure Centre Scottish National League Pirates win at home, at last! Pirates looked in determined mood from the start and were quickly rewarded when a solo charge through the Kestrels back line by Rab Henderson put them in front inside the first 90 seconds. A string of half chances for Pirates followed as they dominated the first session. Henderson got his name on the scoresheet again in the 12th minute but this time for the wrong reason with he and Kestrels netminder Colin Grubb both receiving 2+2 penalties after a bout of handbags at Grubb's net. Pirates found themselves on the powerplay seconds later but couldn't convert on this but they did add to the score at even strength in the 16th minute, John Churchill firing home from close range off the goal post. Pirates gave the visitors a late powerplay opportunity and this was the only time Kestrels ventured forward with any purpose in the first session. Pirates were quickly shorthanded at the start of the second session but it was they who came closest to scoring but Murray Johnston misfired in front. Johnston did play a part in Pirates third goal in the 24th minute, his persistence setting up James Clark. Pirates continued to dominate and they completed the scoring in the 31st minute, Clark netting his second with a mishit shot that fooled Grubb. Kestrels enjoyed the better of the chances in the remainder of the period with a point blank save from Gordon Langford in the 39th minute to keep out Liam Greig the pick of them. The final period was pretty much a damp squib affair, with Pirates coach Paul Heavey clearly unhappy with his charges lacklustre start, calling a time out after only 3 minutes of the period. Kestrels spent much of the period on the powerplay but without success. This included a 4 minute opportunity after Chris Conaboy got first use of the showers in the 49th minute after referee Richard Blair handed him a 2+2+10 penalty for roughing following an incident near the Kestrels net. Mark McAndrew and Ian Simpson had chances during the extended advantage but couldn't convert. Pirates ended the game shorthanded but Kestrels couldn't break Langford's shutout. A night of firsts for the Paisley side, first home win, first league win anda first shut out of the season. They now have an early chance to avenge last weekend's defeat when Camperdown visit the Lagoon on Saturday night.
