Here is a match report for The Paisley Pirates vs Solway Sharks
Paisley Pirates 10 Solway Sharks 6
27/12/2003 at Lagoon Leisure Centre
Scottish National League
It was a return to the old days of shootout hockey at the Lagoon as Pirates ended the year on a high.
Pirates set the tone for the evening when they opened the scoring after only 27 seconds, Richie Thorp pouncing on a loose puck in the slot. Pirates survived a powerplay before they doubled their lead in the 7th minute, Colin McMillan muscling home in front after Sharks couldn't clear a Rab Henderson point drive. Another Pirates penalty allowed Sharks back into the game in the 9th minute, Mark Gallagher finding himself unmarked in front. Only a desperate lunge from netminder Gordon Langford in the 11th minute stopped Bobby Chalmers levelling up. Unfortunately referee Rab Cowan judged it a
foul and Pirates were shorthanded again. From which Langford was called into action again, touching a Chris Gracie point drive onto the post. After the powerplay, Pirates enjoyed the upper hand but couldn't add to the score.
Pirates again made the running in the opening moments of the second period only point blank stops from Dewar Anderson keeping out McMillan and John Churchill. Sharks didn't waste the lifeline Tommy McKay one timing a David Edgar setup home for the equaliser in the 22nd minute. The home crowd was stunned again when Chalmers broke clear in the 23rd minute to put the Sharks in front. A nervy three minutes passed before McMillan battled through the Sharks defence to level up again. The sides traded penalties leaving a four on four situation in the 29th minute and it was Pirates who took advantage of the extra space, Colin Nelson picking the puck up at the point and he
skated in before firing Pirates back in front. Barely 90 seconds later and Churchill gave Pirates breathing space again. Sharks looked rattled and when they gave Pirates a powerplay in the 32nd minute, Nelson punished them sending a vicious wrist shot into the top corner. Sharks had the puck in the net again in the 38th minute but McKay was adjudged to have kicked the puck in. Pirates rubbed salt in the wound when Thorp completed the period scoring 20 seconds later.

The action didn't let up at the start of the third period, Thorp completing his hat trick after barely a minute. Then Churchill fired off the bar, allowing Sharks to break from which Alan Crane pulled a goal back in the 43rd minute. Sharks were then given a six minute powerplay when Nelson was adjudged to have attempted to spear Colin Freeman. With a total of 16 minutes for the offence, the Pirates assistant captain's night was over.
Sharks did pull a goal back on the extended advantage through Crane in the 48th minute and the home support were holding their breath as an unlikely comeback looked on when McKay pulled Sharks within two goals in the 50th minute. However, it took Pirates only 36 seconds to settle the nerves, Gary Morris finding Myles Watson unmarked in front. Chalmers almost pulled a bizarre goal back in the 52nd minute when his shot from centre ice took a weird bounce off the post, with Langford beaten. There was to be only one more goal and it went the way of Pirates, Chris Conaboy firing home after a bout of pinball in front of the Sharks net.
