| FURY AS PIRATES MATCH IS SUNK A PROBE has been launched after the weekend ice hockey clash between Paisley Pirates and Kilmarnock Avalanche was called off just minutes before face-off. The game was cancelled before the players took to the ice by management at the Galleon Centre. They claimed the Paisley team damaged the dressing room and hurled abuse at staff. Now the Pirates could be hit with a bill for hundreds of pounds if an inquiry finds them to blame. Fury erupted as hundreds of fans who made the journey to the arena in Kilmarnock had to head home without seeing any action after the shock decision. The game was called off following allegations that the Pirates players had damaged property at the centre and hurled abuse at three staff members two women and a man. It's alleged benches were removed from the Pirates dressing room, but had not been damaged. And a fluorescent strip light was removed from the changing room in a bit of high jinks before the game. Amid fears the situation might get out of hand, officials at the centre decided the match should not be played. There was anger among team members and supporters of both sides, and claims of an over-reaction to something that had been a "silly prank". Management of both teams investigated the allegations and the cancellation did not go down well with either club. Pirates coach Paul Heavey yesterday said: "It was a strange one and I'm personally very disappointed at what happened, but I'm more disappointed for the fans who turned up expecting to see a game and were left feeling short-changed." Pirates secretary Bill Elliot said: "We expected the match to be a good one. To have it called off under such unusual circumstances was a blow. Supporters were not happy" "We worked hard to encourage our supporters to travel to Kilmarnock, to the extent of printing directions as to how to get to the rink. "A good number of supporters turned up and all fans were there for what they expected to be a good match. "To have it called off under such unusual circumstances was a blow. "I got there about an hour before the scheduled start to be told the match had already been cancelled. "Quite a few of our supporters arrived after me and they were not happy to discover that they had made a wasted journey to Kilmarnock. "The Scottish Ice Hockey Association has launched an inquiry, as they are bound to do when any match is not played as scheduled, and we are now formulating our submission to the SIHA." A spokesman at the centre said: "There was an incident and an inquiry into it is now taking place." One source said later: "If the Pirates are found to be responsible for what is alleged to have happened they could be sent a bill for hundreds of pounds. That would be for damage caused and perhaps staff wages. "The other side would be billed for the ice rink booking." Brian Findlay, chairman of Kilmarnock Ice Hockey Club, said: "The home team had nothing to do with this alleged incident. From what I've heard it's been a bit of tomfoolery." |
