Paisley Pirates Ice Hockey Team
In The Beginning

The Paisley Pirates were founded originally in 1946 and played out of East Lane arena (where Somerfield now stands). The Pirates won the Scottish National League in 1954 and were winners of the first British League in 1959. After a short absence of hockey, East Lane was once again home to a Paisley team this time the Mohawks. They started up in 1966 and played in the Northern League, which they won three years running 1969-69, until 1977 when the ice rink was demolished to make way for a supermarket.
The Paisley Pirates were started up again in 1992 at the newly built ice rink at the Lagoon Leisure Centre. Their first game was against Kirkcaldy Kestrels on January 3rd 1992, a game that they won 19-5.
Featuring players such as Mike Bettens, Graham Garden, Craig McWilliam and Richie Lamb, the Pirates won the Scottish League Division one after losing only one game (in Castlereagh).
The following season Martin Shields returned as coach and took the Pirates into the British Division One North where they finished in 5th place.
Season 1994/95 and Martin Shields again returned as coach and with players like Dave Rook, Dino Bauba, Alex Koulikov, and Kenny McKie, the Pirates finished 3rd in the league and were also Scottish Cup finalists.
Martin Shields returned for his fourth season in charge and finished the season mid table. Some of the players from that season were Jouka Viljakainen, Graeme McLean, Paul Hand and Mike Mowbray.
1996/97 proved to be a very memorable season for some. Import Doug Marsden had returned and replaced Martin Shields as coach and Allan Maxwell took over the management of the team. Players in the team that year were Ricky Grubb, Neil Smith, John Kidd and lain Robertson
