KELLY CAPTURES INJURED SCOTT’S N-ICEST MOVES Paisley Dailey Express Feb 20 2008
AN ice hockey fan has warmed the hearts of Paisley Pirates players after she made a special presentation to injured forward Scott Cowan.
Buddie Kelly McGlynn was so moved by the stricken player’s horror injury that she designed a collage of his best on-ice moments, put it in a photo album and gave it to him.
But the Pirates repaid her loyalty by making it a double presentation.
As a thank you for her support and backing, Pirates star Iain Simpson presented Kelly – nicknamed ‘Superfan’ by the players – with a signed stick for her to treasure.
Kelly turned 19 the day before the presentation, making it even more special for the diehard Pirates fan.
Star-struck Kelly said: “Scott was so chuffed when I handed him with the photo album, he couldn’t believe what I’d done as we’d managed to do it behind his back.
“He thought he was going to make the presentation for the Man-of-the-Match award, but when he saw the album, he was really embarrassed, but delighted.
“I managed to get all the players to sign it and his fiancee Helen has got her own special message in it to him too – surrounded by lovehearts!”
Cowan, or ‘Cowbags’ as he’s nicknamed, was part of the Pirates team that picked up their first win on the road since October and he’s been a big player for them this season, shooting to the top of the scoring charts.
In his last game, he helped the Pirates to a well-deserved 5-3 Scottish Premier Ice Hockey League victory over Solway Sharks in Dumfries, but it came at a price.
Scott, 27, received a serious injury to his arm after being charged into the boards by Sharks’ Matt Seddon and, after being taken to hospital, it was discovered that he’d broken his arm in three places.
But Kelly eased the pain with her collection of get well soon messages, pictures and press clippings from Scott’s career so far.
Managing director at the Paisley Pirates Allan Paul said: “We’re delighted to recognise the hard work that Kelly put in to make Scott’s day.
“Kelly goes to every home game and all the players felt they should get together and do something as a thank you for all her support and they gave her a signed stick.”
And she’s delighted. Kelly said: “They all know that Iain Simpson is my favourite player, so Iain came down and presented me with Scott’s stick from last year.
“Ant it’s not a duff one either, it’s Scott’s lucky stick and now I’ve got it, it’s unbelievable.”
Cowan, meanwhile, has been told not to rush his rehabilitation.
Allan Paul said: “One of the things we have said to Scott is not to rush himself back, his job is safe here.
“The most important thing is that he gets better and even if it takes until next season, we’ll be more than happy to have him back.”
He added: “Seemingly, the prognosis is very good and we are confident we can get him back on the ice, but the important thing is that he doesn’t return too quickly.”
Kelly added: “The photo album has only got one page left to fill, so when this story goes in the Express, that will be it completed!”
